Think you Know Tenerife? Test Your Knowledge Against These 11 Facts

Tenerife, has become one of the most popular holiday destinations for British, Portuguese and Spanish families and couples. It’s not a huge surprise due to its amazing year-round weather, wonderful beaches and affordable hotels and resorts. Have you been? If not, find the perfect holiday deal here. Let’s start with a few easy facts about Tenerife:

  • Tenerife is 1 of 7 islands that makes up the popular holiday destination, Canary Islands. They are located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the west coast of Africa but are owned by Spain.
  • It is the largest of the islands and has more inhabitants than the others. Tenerife became a major holiday destination for many people in the late 70’s.
  • After the death of Franco Spain became a democratic country. Spain now celebrates ‘Constitution Day’ with a bank holiday on December 6th. If your visiting during this time ask your hotel about local celebrations.
  • Tenerife has two international airports. One serves the South of the island will the other serves the North, Reina Sofia and Los Rodeos, respectively.
  • Tenerife has the most-visited national park in all of Spain. It’s called Teide National Park and it is the home of the 3,718-metre volcano, Teide.

Now, lets make it more interesting

  • Do you know any films that were filmed on the island?  Here’s 3 – Clash of the Titans (2010), Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005) and One Million Years B.C. (1966).  So, if you take a day tour around the island you may recognise a few spots.
  • The island has a World-famous water park, Siam Park. It is the largest outdoor waterpark in Europe and it holds many world records, such as the largest man-made wave in the world. So, be sure to pack your swimsuit!
  • This one may surprise you but, Scotland and Tenerife share the same flag.
  • After the national park, Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz, is the biggest attraction on the island of Tenerife. There used to be an Orca whale show. When Keto the headlining whale killed its trainer, the show was changed to a safer dolphin show.

  • Many years ago, a famous writer would visit Tenerife to escape the media. Here she wrote a few books. Her book ‘The Man From The Sea’ mentions a few locations around the island. Do you know who it was? It’s Agatha Christine.
  • The naturally made beaches are black because it is made from molten volcanic rock. It is not dirty but probably best not to wear white when you visit. If a beach has ‘normal’ yellow sand then it is safe to assume that it is man-made.
